Best Plants for Shaded Balconies That Hardly Get Direct Sunlight

Not every balcony basks in bright sunlight. Many face directions where they get just a little bit of indirect light. The good news: there are plenty of plants that actually prefer that.

Snake plant, ZZ plant and peace lily are classic low-light champions. They tolerate shade and still look lush with minimal fuss. Money plant (pothos) also does well in indirect light and can trail beautifully from hanging pots or shelves.

Ferns like Boston fern can thrive in shady, humid spots. Just make sure the soil stays slightly moist and doesn’t completely dry out.

If you want a bit of colour, some varieties of aglaonema and certain shade-tolerant coleus can add pattern and interest without full sun.

Even in shade, plants need some brightness—total darkness won’t work. Place them where they get soft, filtered light, and avoid overwatering, which is a common problem in lower light areas.

A shaded balcony doesn’t have to be plant-less. It just needs the right kind of green.
