Decorating Small Living Rooms So They Look Cozy, Not Crowded

Small living rooms can easily tip from “cozy” to “cluttered.” The goal is to keep them warm and welcoming without stuffing them.

Choose appropriately sized furniture. A huge sectional sofa might look tempting, but it will dominate the room. A compact sofa with one or two chairs often works better than one oversized piece.

Use light or mid-tone colours on walls and big furniture so the room feels open. You can add deeper tones in cushions, throws and small decor items.

Keep pathways clear. Don’t block natural walking routes with coffee tables or extra stools. If you bump into furniture often, something needs to move or shrink.

Wall-mounted shelves and lights free up floor space. A slim wall-mounted TV unit looks lighter than a bulky entertainment cabinet.

Limit the number of decor pieces. A few well-chosen items—a plant, lamp, artwork—have more impact than twenty small objects fighting for attention.

Small can be lovely, if you let the room breathe.
