Growing Simple Herbs in Pots for Daily Cooking (Even in a Tiny Balcony)

Fresh herbs can completely change how home-cooked food tastes, and you don’t need a big garden to grow them. A small balcony, window ledge or even a sunny spot near a window is enough.

Start with easy herbs like mint, coriander, basil, curry leaf or chives. They grow happily in small to medium pots. Make sure the pots have drainage holes and use a light potting mix instead of heavy garden soil.

Most herbs need good light—around four to six hours of sun or bright indirect light. On very hot days, a bit of shade in the afternoon keeps them from burning.

Water them regularly, but don’t drown them. The soil should be moist, not soggy. A quick finger test in the soil tells you if it’s dry below the surface.

Harvest gently—snip a few leaves at a time rather than cutting the whole plant. Regular cutting often encourages more growth.

Within a few weeks, you’ll be picking fresh mint for tea or coriander for garnishing right from your own balcony.
