Renovation almost always takes longer than you think. But with a bit of planning, you can keep your life from going totally upside down.
First, be honest about your calendar. Avoid starting major work right before exams, a baby due date, a big work deadline, or festival season if you can. You’ll already be under pressure; adding dust and noise on top can be too much.
Break the project into phases. Even if you’re renovating the whole home, decide which areas are priority and which can wait. Make sure you always have at least one functioning bathroom and one semi-usable room.
Add buffer time to whatever timeline the contractor gives you. If they say six weeks, mentally prepare for eight. This way, delays feel manageable, not shocking.
Discuss working hours and noisy tasks upfront. If you or your neighbours work from home, plan the loudest work in blocks so everyone can adjust.
Finally, prepare a “daily life kit” before work starts—basic kitchen tools, a few plates, bedding, medicines, important documents and chargers—kept in one place. When everything else is in boxes, this kit stops you from feeling completely lost.
