Simple Appliance Care Habits That Help Your Fridge, AC and Washing Machine Last Longer

Appliances are like quiet team members in your home. Take a little care of them, and they’ll work better and last longer.

For the fridge, don’t overload it so much that air can’t move. Leave some space between containers. Clean the rubber door seals and check they close properly. Defrost older models when ice builds up, and wipe spills quickly to avoid smells and sticky shelves.

ACs need clean filters. At least once in a month or two during heavy use, open the indoor unit and wash or vacuum the filters. Dust-choked filters make cooling weaker and power use higher. Also keep the outdoor unit area clear of leaves and debris.

With washing machines, avoid stuffing them to the brim. Overloading puts stress on the motor and damages clothes. Use the right amount of detergent—too much creates residue. Once in a while, run an empty cycle with a machine cleaner or mild vinegar to remove buildup.

Don’t ignore weird sounds or smells. A little attention right when something feels “off” can prevent bigger repairs later. Small habits quietly save you money on both electricity and breakdowns.
