Why Good Ventilation Is a Design Feature, Not Just a “Nice to Have”

Ventilation doesn’t look glamorous, but you feel its absence very quickly. A well-ventilated home smells fresher, feels more alive and is healthier to live in.

Cross-ventilation—where air can enter from one side and exit from another—is ideal. When designing or choosing a home, notice if windows are placed on opposite or adjacent walls, not just one side.

Stale air builds up moisture, odours and sometimes even mould. Areas like kitchens and bathrooms especially need proper exhausts or windows that actually open and get used.

Good ventilation can also reduce dependence on artificial cooling. Even in hot climates, moving air feels more comfortable than trapped heat. Ceiling fans, openable windows and vents all play a role.

If you’re renovating, consider adding ventilators above doors, using louvred panels, or making sure windows aren’t blocked by huge fixed furniture.

You can’t “see” ventilation in photos, but you definitely experience it when you live there.
