Kitchen Plumbing Habits That Help Prevent Clogged Sinks and Bad Smells

Most kitchen plumbing problems come from what we send down the drain without thinking. A few small habits can keep your sink flowing smoothly.

Never pour used oil, ghee or greasy gravy directly into the sink. As they cool, they harden and stick to pipes, slowly narrowing the passage. Instead, wipe oily pans with tissue or an old cloth before washing, and throw that in the trash.

Use a sink strainer to catch food bits, peels and tea leaves. Empty it into the dustbin instead of letting particles slip into the pipes.

Once in a while, pour hot (not boiling) water down the drain to help dissolve grease film. You can follow it with a bit of baking soda and vinegar, let it fizz, then rinse again.

If you notice mild smells, don’t ignore them. They are often an early sign of buildup.

Good plumbing is part visible pipe, part invisible habit.
